Your teeth can naturally lose their shine over time. This can be caused by certain foods and habits that can stain your teeth and cause them to look dark and discoloured. If this has happened to you and you want to teeth whitening, Yonge Eglinton Dental can help.
Why come to a dentist for teeth whitening?
At-home teeth whitening products are readily available at drug stores, but they are not as effective as teeth whitening performed by a dental professional. Also, some in-store products exaggerate their claims; resulting in disappointing results which can damage your teeth.
What causes teeth to change colour?
Teeth will naturally discolour over time. This is a natural part of the aging process. In some instances, the white enamel shell on our teeth thins out which exposes the yellow-coloured dentin behind the enamel. Also, coffee, red wine and tobacco will also change the colour of teeth over time. A round of treatments can reverse some of this discolouration.
The in-office teeth whitening procedure
Your dentist or hygienist will apply a bleaching gel made up of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to the front surface of your teeth. Then they will apply a curing light or laser to activate the bleaching agent. The gel is left on the teeth between 45 and 60 minutes. The ingredients in whitening agents have been used for years. While they might make your teeth feel sensitive or tingly at first, the feeling will subside shortly.
The advantage of teeth whitening
It is non-invasive and the effects can be observed immediately.
The disadvantage of teeth whitening
Teeth whitening can cause sensitivity in patients and the results can degrade over time. To combat this, we will provide you with customized trays to manage any post-operative sensitivity. These trays will also be used to periodically touch up your teeth to maintain the results achieved by the whitening process.
